Common questions

What is the difference between percentage of and percentage change?

Percentage of finds a part of a base number. Percentage change compares the difference between an old and new value with the original value.

Why is a 20 percent increase followed by a 20 percent decrease not back to the original?

The second percentage uses a different base. Increasing 100 by 20 percent gives 120. Decreasing 120 by 20 percent removes 24, leaving 96.

Should I enter 15 or 0.15 for 15 percent?

Follow the unit shown by the field. A field labeled percent usually expects 15 for 15 percent, while a formula written as a decimal may use 0.15.
